No. 2 – Seahawks CB Shaquill Griffin

It was almost a foregone conclusion that Ronald Darby would re-sign with the Washington Football Team in free agency. And then he didn’t. Now, Washington has an unexpected need at boundary cornerback, and they’re suddenly players on the open market.

The Washington Football Team runs a hybrid man-zone scheme for its cornerbacks, so they should search for a cornerback who can fulfill both man and zone requirements. In this free agent class, perhaps no cornerback matches Washington’s need better than Seahawks cover man Shaquill Griffin.

With Griffin, the appeal is two-fold. First, he’s insanely athletic and insanely productive. At 6-foot-0, 198 pounds, he has a 4.38 40-yard dash, a 38.5-inch vertical, a 132-inch broad jump, and a 6.87 three-cone time. Those elite athleticism numbers have helped him rack up tons of plays on the ball. Through four seasons, Griffin has six interceptions and 48 deflections to his name. He also made the Pro Bowl in 2019.

Griffin can be a bit volatile, but his upside is through the roof, and his age is the other major benefit in this union. Griffin is still just 25 years old. He turns 26 in July, and from there, he feasibly has at least four more prime years left. For a Washington Football Team that’s not expected to contend in 2021, but potentially in 2022, Griffin makes a lot of sense.

Update: Shaquill Griffin has signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
