15 best free agent targets for the Washington Football Team
11. S Anthony Harris
And now, we’re on to the secondary. First up, it’s a potential big-time upgrade at free safety.
Harris was considered to be the top free-agent safety by many last offseason. The Vikings slapped him with the franchise tag as a result. However, his play fell off a bit in 2020.
While Harris recorded a whopping 104 tackles, the most in his career to date, he didn’t manage to grab an interception. He had led the league in 2019 with six and had three the season before, so last year’s lack of picks can likely be chalked up to one thing.
Harris was playing with a group of very inexperienced cornerbacks. Early in the season, they struggled immensely to cover anyone. So, teams simply avoided throwing near Harris and Harrison Smith when they could. They targeted the corners instead.
As such, Harris had to help with tackling, and that’s why he logged over 100 of those. It also explains why he specifically was targeted just 28 times on the year and allowed 15 receptions.
Harris still has a strong skill set and as part of a better secondary, he could have more opportunities to make plays. Washington is desperate for free safety help and he would fit well into this defense but wouldn’t break the bank either. It seems like a good match, or one that the two sides should consider at the very least.
