Washington Football Team Free Agency Evaluation – Quarterbacks
Upper Tier
Jameis Winston, Saints
The Saints would love to re-sign Winston to a long-term deal, but their salary cap is strangling the team down by the swampy bayou. Winston has quietly resurrected his career and he is fully capable of putting up massive numbers. Spending a year under the guidance of Drew Brees obviously enhances his resume, but he still needs to work on limiting the interceptions. The Washington Football Team could shock the football world by signing Winston.
Cam Newton, Patriots
Could Cam be coming to Ashburn sometime soon? He was injured and missed most of 2019 in Carolina, but the former Auburn Tiger spent last fall in New England. He battled COVID and some nagging injuries, but had a decent outing in 2020. It’s actually better than decent when you consider that he had almost no help from the receivers, tight ends, and running backs. With a better group of players, Newton could return to being a solid quarterback for many more years.
Update: Cam Newton signed a one-year extension with the New England Patriots shortly after the submission of this article.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dolphins
Ryan Fitzpatrick is old, but he is not as old as Tom Brady or Drew Brees. We think that is a compliment. “Fitzmagic” continues to defy Father Time and he has carved out a very respectable career. Various social media sources suggest that Fitzpatrick would like to continue playing. Should Washington give him the saddle and reins for a year or two? It’s not the worst idea, but the powers that be in Ashburn will probably look elsewhere.
Prediction: Jameis Winston shouldn’t be ruled out at this time, but Fitzpatrick is not a good fit in Washington. Newton would not have been a good fit at this point in time, either.
