Pseudo Incumbents

Three other teams will start a quarterback who was on their roster in 2020. Each is in a different situation. They are Los Angeles Chargers (Justin Herbert), Philadelphia (Jalen Hurts), and New Orleans (Jameis Winston).

Herbert is clearly the man for the Chargers, but the other two have more complicated paths. Philadelphia is likely to bring in someone – it could be a veteran or it could be a rookie – to compete with Hurts, who started the last several games of 2020. I just don’t see them bringing in someone who will grab the job from Hurts by opening day. If you’re the Eagles, you have to give Hurts a shot at proving he belongs.

In New Orleans, I think it has always been the plan for Winston to watch Drew Brees for a season and then take over. I thought this even when Taysom Hill was chosen as the replacement during Brees’ injury in 2020. The only thing complicating this scenario is that Brees has not yet officially retired. We all assume it is happening, but until it does – well, stranger things have happened.

If Brees decides he wants another year, then dominoes begin to fall. I assume Winston will not sit on the bench another season. He will go somewhere, causing us all to rewrite these prediction articles. But for now, I see Jameis completing ten passes to a rejuvenated Michael Thomas come opening day.
