Washington Football Team to send multiple people to Trey Lance’s pro day

The Washington Football Team has a need for a franchise quarterback.

There were hopes that Dwayne Haskins would become the Washington Football Team’s long-term solution at the quarterback position, after the team spent a mid first-round pick on the Ohio State product in 2019. Instead, Haskins flamed out in Year 2, and left Washington with yet another failed first-round experiment.

But these failings of the previous regime shouldn’t dissuade the Washington Football Team from gambling again. Every prospect is different, and on the surface, the 2021 NFL Draft’s quarterback group is lightyears stronger than the 2019 batch.

If you’re asking me, I would rate the top five signal callers in the 2021 NFL Draft — Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones — all above Haskins as a prospect. If the Washington Football Team has an opportunity to pick any of those players, they shouldn’t hesitate.

Of course, it won’t be easy for Washington to get an opportunity. They pick at No. 19 in the NFL Draft, and they’d have to trade up over over half a dozen other potential QB needy teams to get their guy. That’s not a likely proposition. Nevertheless, Washington is doing their due diligence, as they should.

According to NBC Sports reporter Pete Hailey, who corroborated a report from Albert Breer, the Washington Football Team is sending general manager Martin Mayhew and offensive coordinator Scott Turner to the North Dakota State pro day later today.

Trey Lance isn’t the only high-profile prospect set to attend North Dakota State’s pro day. Offensive tackle Dillon Radunz will also be there. Radunz is a potential fit for Washington on Day 2, but Trey Lance demands the most attention. He has a chance to win over the Washington Football Team with a strong performance.

On the surface, Lance already has qualities that make him appealing for Ron Rivera. He’s known as a tremendous leader and a hard worker, and it’s clear from watching his tape that he has good natural mechanical ability. Beyond that, Lance is an elite athlete with excellent arm strength and a compact throwing motion. He’d be an excellent fit for Scott Turner’s offense, which could have used more dynamic ability at quarterback in 2020.

Lance may end up needing a little bit of an acclimation period, moving from the FCS to the NFL, but he has a ton of upside, and he’d potentially be a bit more affordable for Washington in a trade up.

Either way, the Washington Football Team is going to have to trade up, if they want to acquire Lance. Quarterback is one of the only big voids remaining on their roster, and if Washington is aggressive enough, they could earn a chance to fill that void this offseason. They’ll be in attendance at Lance’s pro day today, likely to gain more information and assess the viability of that option.
