Washington Football Team releases Thomas Davis who will retire as a Panther
Washington Football Team linebacker Thomas Davis is set to retire as a member of the Carolina Panthers.
When Ron Rivera first joined the Washington Football Team as their head coach, he was looking to change the team’s culture. In his efforts to do that, he elected to bring on a player that had played for him for almost all of his Carolina Panthers tenure, Thomas Davis.
Davis, a long-time NFL linebacker, had been released by the Los Angeles Chargers after one season with the team. Though he was entering his age-37 season, he was coming off a 112-tackle campaign and still felt like he could play a role at the NFL level.
Davis signed with Washington and appeared in seven games. He made just six tackles, but he was a key veteran presence in the locker room for an otherwise very young team.
Now, Davis will be calling it quits. He announced that he will retire as a member of the Carolina Panthers, where he spent 13 of his 15 years, after his release from the Washington Football Team, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Davis only was signed to a one-year contract with Washington, but it technically didn’t end until the new league year starts on March 17. Letting him go early doesn’t make any impact on Washington, but it was a classy move nonetheless.
While Davis didn’t make that much of an impact on the field for Washington, his presence will be missed. Washington will need to consider adding another respected veteran to their defense to help that unit continue its growth into one of the league’s best.
Luckily, there are plenty of veteran linebackers available this offseason with plenty left in the tank. So, perhaps they could end up being targets on short-term deals for Washington while other teams are dealing with salary cap crunches.
Davis’ chapter in Washington may not have been that memorable, but fans can still take pride in the fact that a player with 199 career games played, over 1,200 tackles, 29 sacks, 18 forced fumbles, and 13 interceptions once played for their beloved Football Team.
Enjoy retirement, Mr. Davis. Congrats on a terrific NFL career!
