Washington Football Team: Potential cap casualties to target this offseason
By Jonathan Eig
S Bobby McCain, Dolphins
A year ago, Washington signed free agent Sean Davis in the hopes that he would solidify the free safety position.
Davis didn’t make it out of training camp. Young vet Troy Apke was handed the job. He lasted about a month before he was benched. Washington got by with rookie Kam Curl for a while, before Landon Collins’ injury allowed Curl to play a more natural in-the-box role.
Then Deshazor Everett and Jeremy Reaves filled in. Washington continues to look for a steady DB to patrol the back end.

Bobby McCain might be an ideal fit. He was a cornerback for most of his career, before converting to safety in the 2019 season. Though the transition wasn’t without hiccups, his general ability in coverage allowed him to perform well enough to hold onto the job in 2020. Still only 27, McCain should only improve as a safety with more experience.
He also served as a defensive captain for the Dolphins. When a coach the caliber of Brian Flores entrusts a player with that role, it says something about his leadership qualities and intelligence. Of course, were McCain to become available, it would mean that Flores believes he can do better.
And maybe he can. McCain is never going to be Ed Reed dominating the deep part of the field. But Washington doesn’t necessarily need Ed Reed back there. They just need a steady presence. That could be Bobby McCain.
