Washington Football Team should consider signing Tre Boston
For the fourth time in five years, Tre Boston is hitting the free-agent market. And for the fourth time in five years, the Washington Football Team should consider signing the free safety.
Boston has been released from his contract with the Carolina Panthers to clear $3.5 million in cap space. The move was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Boston has spent a total of five years with the Panthers split into two different stints. He had stops with the Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals in between. Now, the seven-year veteran will be looking for work once again, and he could consider rejoining some old friends this offseason.

The Washington Football Team is a logical fit for Tre Boston.
Boston has had a lot of success playing as a part of Ron Rivera’s defense and he is obviously connected to the current Washington coach. It’s also worth noting that Marty Hurney was the executive that brought Boston back to Carolina after Dave Gettleman initially cut him after the 2016 season. So, that marks two significant connections that Boston has in Washington.
Beyond the connections, Boston would certainly fill a need for Washington. The team’s biggest weakness in the secondary has long been their free safety play and last season, Troy Apke proved to be a liability there before Deshazor Everett and Jeremy Reaves stabilized the position with decent play.
An upgrade there is needed. Boston would qualify. He has been a ballhawk during his NFL career and he has averaged 2.1 interceptions and six pass defenses per season. Last season, he had a career-high 95 tackles, too, so he appears to be improving in that area as well.
There are concerns with Boston. He is moving onto his fourth different team in five years and while he makes big plays with his ballhawking ability, he can get a little overaggressive at times.
Still, there’s no question that Boston would be an upgrade over what Washington currently has at the position. He won’t turn 29 until June either, so he still has some quality years left in the tank and his particular skill set will pair well with those of Landon Collins and Kam Curl at the other safety spot.
Plus, Boston doesn’t figure to be too expensive. Washington could get him cheap and fill a need with a player that is already familiar with Ron Rivera’s system. That would be a big win at this early stage in the offseason.
We’ll soon see if this is finally the year that the Washington Football Team pursues Tre Boston. But now more than ever, bringing him aboard would seem to make sense.
