Round 7, Pick 213: WR Dez Fitzpatrick, Louisville

Washington adds a third wide receiver in the draft. With this pick, Dez Fitzpatrick of Louisville is not anything like the first two players selected.

Fitzpatrick shows an advanced understanding of leverage in his routes. He breaks at the stem of his routes quickly and fluidly. He is very strong at the catch point and was a consistent contributor despite the turbulent Louisville QB situation following the departure of Lamar Jackson.

Fitzpatrick is a very smart football player. Another quintessential “Ron Rivera” guy. His biggest concern is his average athletic profile. He is not overly fast or quick. His after the catch ability is minimal. He is simply a solid possession receiver. He is reliable but nothing more than just reliable.

For the next level, Fitzpatrick projects as a rotational receiver with the upside to become a reliant target on third downs. With a position that needs a serious boost at talent, a player like Fitzpatrick won’t hurt.

Fitzpatrick is not exciting and won’t bring the wow factor. However, he projects to have a long career in the NFL due to his advanced understanding of the position. Picking him with the last pick of their draft is a no brainer for the Washington Football Team.
