The Washington Football Team has added another new face to their front office.

On Monday morning, it was reported that the team had added Chris Polian as their new Director of Pro Personnel. The Washington Football Team confirmed the news on their official website.

Polian’s name will be familiar to many, as he is the son of long-time Indianapolis Colts general manager turned TV analyst Bill Polian. The younger Polian worked with the Colts from 1998 through 2011 and helped the Peyton Manning-led Colts win a Super Bowl.

Over the course of his career, Polian has held numerous roles ranging anywhere from personnel assistant to the general manager spot he held from 2009-2011 with the Colts. His 26 years of experience should prove valuable in the Washington Football Team’s reshaped front office and will give them yet another former GM to go along with Martin Mayhem and Marty Hurney.

Chris Polian’s recent stops and strengths

Most recently, Polian was with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a Director of Pro Personnel. He held that role through the 2019 season. Jacksonville was up-and-down quite a bit during Polian’s tenure with the team, but he did help to construct the Jaguars team that went to the AFC Championship Game during the 2018 postseason.

The strength of that unit was the team’s defense, a group that Polian helped to add talent to. The Jaguars signed Malik Jackson, Calais Campbell, A.J. Bouye, and Tashaun Gipson while trading for Marcell Dareus to upgrade their stop unit.

Polian’s eye for talent on that side of the ball should be helpful for Washington, especially since they’re positioned to add some new pieces to their roster with their wealth of available cap space. He also was involved with adding key pieces to the team’s offense, like All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell, so that’s a positive too.

It’s unclear exactly how much say and sway Polian will have in Washington’s new-look front office, but this seems like a good hire. At the very least, Polian has a lot of experience and he was a part of the Colts’ lone Super Bowl team. So, he has at least seen what building a Super Bowl contender looks like.

But at his best, Polian was one of the architects of the Jaguars’ best defenses in their franchise’s history. And if he can help supplement the pieces that Washington already has on that side of the ball via free agency, then he could help this stop unit to become one of the league’s best defenses and a truly elite group.
