Washington Football Team reportedly has inquired about Derek Carr
The Washington Football Team made one key move at the quarterback position on Wednesday when they opted to re-sign Taylor Heinicke to a two-year deal, but they aren’t done addressing the quarterback position. Heinicke’s deal is paying him like a backup with some incentives based in for starting, so that indicates that while he may compete for the starting job, the team isn’t relying on him to definitively be the starter.
Instead, the team will continue to hunt for a potential quarterback upgrade for their team. There are quite a few options available this offseason, so Washington will be able to make a move. It’s just a matter of whether they land an above-average passer via trade or if they have to settle on a rookie quarterback to add more competition to the room.
Washington Football Team has inquired about Derek Carr trade
Right now, it looks like the team is continuing to pursue options on the trade market. According to Albert Breer of the MMQB, Washington has been in on the Matthew Stafford trade and has also inquired about the availability of Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr.

"They offered a first-rounder and third-rounder for Stafford, a haul close to what Carolina was willing to give up for him. And they’ve inquired on Carr—who, to this point, has not been made available by the Raiders. I’m also relatively certain that, picking 19th, Washington won’t get Zach Wilson, Justin Fields or Trey Lance without trading up."
Washington’s interest in Carr would make sense. Carr has been a steady, durable, accurate quarterback over the last few seasons and he would certainly be an upgrade for the team. He would be able to play efficient, turnover-free football and though he’s not the biggest playmaker, he can distribute the ball well.
Washington shouldn’t overpay for Carr, but if he’s available, he would be an upgrade. That said, the Raiders seem more likely to move Marcus Mariota at this time, so Carr may not actually be available. His name is one to monitor, nonetheless, and it’s good that Washington gave the Raiders a call to check in.
Breer’s assertion that Washington won’t have a shot at Wilson, Fields, or Lance without trading up is sensible as well. With countless teams in need of either a starting quarterback or a young player at the position, those four quarterbacks will probably be top-10 or top-12 picks barring a big fall for one of them. So, look for Washington to be active on the trade market if they fall in love with one of those prospects.
They also could opt to stay put and select a player like Mac Jones… if he makes it to the 19th pick.
Washington will have options at quarterback this offseason, so it’s nice to see them evaluating them. We’ll see if they can swing a deal with Las Vegas, whether it’s for Carr or Mariota, or if they look elsewhere to upgrade the position.
