Watching a Tampa Bay team that last won a playoff game over 18 years ago come away with a Super Bowl victory should give every Washington Football Team fan hope for the future.

As the world watched the Buccaneers dismantle the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, a reoccurring thought kept ringing in my head: “This Washington Football Team might be closer to a Super Bowl than many think.”

Why should Washington fans have faith in a team that finished 7-9 and lost in the Wild Card round?

Well for starters, in that Wild Card Game, Washington was able to play a competitive game while rolling out Taylor Heinicke at quarterback, who was seeing only his second career start.

Yes, it’s true that Washington never held a lead in the game. Yes, it’s true that the defense gave up 507 yards to the Bucs offense, the most given up all season. But the fact that the game was competitive is a testament to the culture that Ron Rivera is building.

This team believes it has the ability to compete with anyone in the league. Lou Holtz once said: “Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it.”

The players have already shown that they are motivated and have the right attitude, working to make the playoffs after starting the season 2-7. Coach Rivera has continued to preach control to the players, which focuses on attitude, preparation, and effort.

The one thing from Lou Holtz quote that the team needs to improve is the talent on the field, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have set a good blueprint for the Washington Football Team to follow.
