A look at the Washington Football Team’s potential first-round draft picks
By Jonathan Eig
The 2021 NFL draft is about three months away, which means we are now entering serious mock draft season.
You know it is serious mock draft season because Riggo’s Rag’s own Jacob Camenker just released his first mock. Of course, Jacob’s was not the first. The first mock I can recall for the 2021 draft occurred on October 7, 1999, when Mel Kiper had one-day-old Trevor Lawrence going to the Indianapolis Colts with the first pick. There’s a reason why Mel is Mel.
Anyway, now that we’re in serious mock draft season, I decided to peruse about a thousand mocks and get a sense for who the Washington Football Team might select in the first round. This required a lot of google searches but I think the results are sound.
Who the Washington Football Team may take in the 2021 NFL Draft
The consensus pick is Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, He appears in roughly one-third of the mocks I looked at. Since I have previously written a piece called “Why Washington should not draft QB Mac Jones” I don’t have much more to say about that.
Except this. As Jacob pointed out in his mock, the value of quarterbacks is very hard to read. They are the bitcoin of the NFL draft. As the draft approaches, teams tend to panic and elevate marginal QB talent, desperate not to miss out on the next Dan Marino or Aaron Rodgers or Lamar Jackson. These are all QBs who fell to the bottom of the first round and turned out to be better than many players chosen earlier.
In 2021, there will be at least four QBs chosen in the first round – possibly in the first dozen picks – and perhaps as many as six total. Their stock will rise. I think there is a pretty good chance that Mac Jones will not be on the board should Washington stand pat at 19. Should they decide to trade up – well, that’s for another article.
For now, lets’ take a brief look at the players not named Mac who are being most associated with the Washington Football Team in the first round.
