The Washington Football Team’s front office structure is coming into focus.

Over the course of the past week, the Washington Football Team has been finalizing deals with Martin Mayhew and Marty Hurney to join their front office. Originally, it was reported that Hurney would be the team’s general manager, but it was Mayhew that was confirmed to have the title.

Now, Hurney’s title with the team is confirmed. The team’s official website confirmed that Hurney has been named Washington’s Executive Vice President of Football/Player Personnel.

As NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay outlined, he will handle more of the “procedural stuff” while Mayhew will be the team’s “top talent evaluator.”

If Hurney’s role is what Finlay is saying, this seems like a good fit for him. But Washington head coach Ron Rivera called Hurney “a vital part of shaping our roster“, so he and Mayhew will probably work collaboratively in that goal.

Marty Hurney has a history with the Washington Football Team

Hurney was a journalist before Jack Kent Cooke hired him to serve as Washington’s Director of PR during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. From there, he went on to be an Assistant GM and GM in various places before landing in Washington and is said to have a strong understanding of the NFL’s salary cap. That should help the WFT as they navigate a key building period for their franchise.

Of course, the addition of Hurney in an executive VP role is leaving many to wonder what will happen with Kyle Smith. The talented, young executive has helped run the Washington draft with great success in recent seasons, but with Mayhew taking on a large role in the draft and Hurney, essentially, being hired over him, he may look for opportunities for advancement elsewhere.

We’ll soon see what this means for Smith, but losing him would surely be a negative for Washington.

Of course, the positive of these hires is that Hurney and Mayhew have a lot of NFL front office experience. Adding that was critical for a team that was lacking depth and experience in this area. And both men are on the same page as Rivera, so that will create a level of synergy that we haven’t seen in Washington for quite some time.

Until we see this front office attack free agency and the draft, we won’t know exactly what they’re capable of. And even when that time comes, we won’t know if they have any smash hits until the players are on the field. But for now, Washington at least has some experience. It’s just about seeing how the rest of their staff shakes out and if they can truly upgrade this roster.
