player. 87. . Former General Manager. Carolina Panthers. Marty Hurney. 10

Look, in all reality, Marty Hurney will rank higher on this list in terms of how interested Washington is in bringing him on. He has a great relationship with Ron Rivera and worked with him for a good chunk of his tenure with the team.

That said, Hurney isn’t exactly a great fit for Washington. The reasoning has been explained on this website many times.

Shortly after Rivera was hired ahead of the 2020 calendar year, Hurney’s name came up in connection with Washington. At that time, I argued that his mediocre draft history and penchant for overspending in free agency could be a problem for Washington.

More recently, our own Ian Cummings wrote an article that explained that Hurney’s drafting skills would be a downgrade over what Washington already has, as he only typically hits on Round 1 prospects.

"Hurney’s recent record of talent evaluation is not great. He’s hit on his first-round picks since 2017, adding Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, Brian Burns, and Derrick Brown, but after Round 1, he’s been very underwhelming in Rounds 2-7. On Day 3, he has almost no hits."

For those reasons, Hurney doesn’t exactly look appealing. The only way he might work is if Washington wants to keep the structure they have in place and just have Hurney manage all departments to create synergy.

Hurney is a classic case of familiarity vs. potential talent. Could he work out and fit right in? Sure. But are there other candidates that have considerably more upside than Hurney? You bet. Washington is probably better taking on one of the potential-based candidates instead of Hurney. Or, they could add Hurney as an assistant GM to guide a younger candidate. The team has options.
