Alex Smith reportedly ready to start for Washington Football Team
Alex Smith seems ready to return to the Washington Football Team’s starting lineup.
The Washington Football Team has been without Alex Smith in each of their last two games. They went 0-2 in those two contests as opposed to the 4-1 record they have posted when Smith has started this season.
Smith had been out with a calf injury in his surgically-repaired right leg, and the team was proceeding with caution with his injury. After the brutal injury and tough path to recovery that nearly saw him lose his leg and his life, the team surely wouldn’t let him play if they thought that he was at risk of further injuring that leg.
It was a sensible move to let Smith rest and recover in the hopes of him returning late in the season. Now, ahead of the final game, it looks like he’s ready to play. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he is set to start for Washington on Sunday Night Football.
As Rapoport mentioned, the team will confirm that he is ready to go on Sunday morning, but as long as there aren’t any setbacks, Smith should be set to return to the field. That will be a boon for the Washington Football Team.
Smith isn’t a dynamic passer by any means. He simply manages the Washington offense very well. He’s able to avoid interceptions and huge negative plays, something that had been a problem with Dwayne Haskins and part of what led to his release, and he gets the ball into the hands of his playmakers. That’s something that was seriously lacking in the team’s last two starts.
Smith will be able to manage the game against a depleted Eagles defense. If he can just keep the chains moving, complete some key passes, and help Washington wear out Philadelphia, the team should have a chance to win. He’s a steady player. The same cannot be said of Washington’s other options.
Had the team needed to roll with Taylor Heinicke, who looked good against the Panthers in relief of Haskins, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world. The only issue is that Heinicke had been with the team for less than a month and has made just one career NFL start, so he would’ve been a risky start in this matchup.
Starting Smith is certainly Washington’s safest move, and it should give them a chance to win in this contest. We’ll soon see what he can do, but it looks like Smith will be granted a chance to fight for Washington’s first NFC divisional title since 2015.
