How to slow down Hurts

So how can Washington slow down a weapon that Coach Rivera finds to be similar to Russell Wilson?

It all comes down to getting pressure on Hurts and trying to keep him in the pocket. His scouting report stated that his processing in the pocket needs improvement so Washington’s defense could take advantage of that.

In the win against New Orleans, the Saints defense was only able to get three quarterback hits and no sacks, the same as Washington’s defense against the Seahawks. In Philadelphia’s two losses with Hurts as the starter, the Cardinals and Cowboys combined for 15 quarterback hits and nine sacks.

With Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and Daron Payne leading the way, Washington’s defense should be able to feast on the Eagles offensive line and force Hurts into some poor decisions.

The Eagles have focused on giving Hurts high-probability passing opportunities, focusing on plays under 10 air yards. According to NextGen Stats, Hurts has had the most success behind the line of scrimmage to 10 yards out on the left side of the field, and 10 to 20 yards out in the middle of the field.

If Washington’s defense can shut down throws to Miles Sanders in the backfield and passes intended for the dual-TE weapons of Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert, it will go a long way towards slowing down Hurts.
