Dontrelle Inman is back with the Washington Football Team.

The Washington Football Team made the surprising decision to waiver Dontrelle Inman ahead of their last game. The team needed a roster spot to activate Antonio Gandy-Golden from IR, and Inman ended up being the expendable man in the receiving corps.

However, Inman’s time with Washington is not over. According to the team’s official Twitter account, they have signed Inman to the practice squad. To make room for the veteran receiver, running back Michael Warren was released.

Warren’s release makes sense, at this point. The team signed Warren as potential depth when Antonio Gibson went down with a toe injury, but he and fellow practice squader Javon Leake never saw action for the team on offense. They were just there in case either J.D. McKissic or Peyton Barber got hurt in game action. Maybe Warren will rejoin the team during the offseason as a 90-man roster signee to compete for a depth job in the RB room.

As for keeping Inman, this was a sensible move. Inman hasn’t been great this year, but the team needs a veteran presence in the receiver room just to help their younger players develop, if nothing else. And in spot-starting action, Inman can still do a decent job. He had a two-TD game against the Browns earlier in the year and had a five-catch, 45-yard day against the Giants in Week 6.

That’s mostly why Inman was kept around. In case one of their younger receivers struggles to develop or in case a player gets hurt, they have someone around that they know can at least fill in for them. It would’ve been hard to find another player to fill that role at this point in the season.

Washington will probably try to upgrade their receiver spot this offseason, as they need a true complementary weapon to use across from Terry McLaurin. We’ll see what they end up doing, but in the short-term, keeping Inman for the rest of the season and for any potential playoff run makes sense.
