These teams could be interested in adding former Washington Football Team QB Dwayne Haskins.

The Washington Football Team released Dwayne Haskins on Monday afternoon in a move that cemented him as one of the biggest first-round busts for the team in recent memory. Just two years into his career, Haskins will be looking for a new team.

After his on-field performance and off-field antics, it’s worth wondering if another team will be willing to give him a shot. He isn’t likely to be claimed on waivers, but Haskins still has raw talent, and perhaps a scouting department or coach that liked his upside will be willing to take a chance on him either as a practice squader and 90-man roster signee. It’s no guarantee, but it definitely is possible.

With that said, here’s a look at a list of teams that could consider adding Dwayne Haskins to their rosters… if they’re willing to invest in his development and bank on him putting himself before the team.

More from Riggo's Rag

New England Patriots. The Cam Newton experiment has failed for the Patriots and the only quarterback they have under contract next season is Jarrett Stidham, who has looked worse than Newton when in action this year. Bill Belichick has a reputation for picking up players off the scrap heap and awarding players second chances, so he may be willing to give Haskins a shot.

Of course, Belichick is also a no-nonsense head coach, so he may look at the decisions that Haskins made the last couple of weeks and decide that he’s not worth the potential distraction. Still, if the Patriots are getting Haskins cheap, they may be willing to take a chance on him.

Pittsburgh Steelers. Against the Colts, Ben Roethlisberger finally threw the ball downfield in a way that inspires confidence, but the long-time Steelers starter just turned 38 and the team needs a successor.

Haskins has some Roethlisberger-type traits, so perhaps the Steelers could add him to develop behind Big Ben for another year or so. He has more upside than third-string QB Joshua Dobbs but like the Patriots, the Steelers would have to decide if he’s worth the headache.

Los Angeles Rams. Sean McVay and Co. are set to start John Wolford with Jared Goff (thumb) out this week. If Wolford falls flat, the Rams may look into adding another young quarterback to develop behind Goff. Haskins has arm talent and based on McVay’s work with Goff, you couldn’t ask for a mentor better for Haskins… if Haskins is willing to put in the work and not get distracted by the bright lights of L.A.

Kansas City Chiefs. Here’s another great mentorship spot for Haskins. Andy Reid has done an excellent job developing passers during his career, and a year or two as a third-stringer behind Patrick Mahomes and a veteran backup could be just what the doctor ordered for the developing Haskins.

Of course, given how good Mahomes is, Haskins would only likely land a practice squad spot and the Chiefs may not be interested in developing another QB right now. Still, the fit could be solid enough to consider, at least.

Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan is 35. His backup, Matt Schaub, is 39, incredibly. The Falcons do have 25-year-old Kurt Benkert on the practice squad, but he has only been a practice-squader during his three-year career. Adding Haskins to compete with Benkert for a role behind Ryan could be beneficial for the Falcons as they look for a successor to Ryan.

Detroit Lions. The Lions are in a similar boat to the Falcons. Matthew Stafford is only 32, but he has been injury-prone and the team may want to consider bringing in a younger backup than Chase Daniel and one with more upside than David Blough. Haskins would qualify, but with no GM or full-time head coach in place, the Lions may opt not to bring Haskins aboard in wake of his recent antics.

In short, there are options. There always will be for talented young quarterbacks. That said, it’s also entirely possible that Haskins remains unsigned for a while until the offseason and any potential signing for him may be based on him convincing teams that he can change his attitude. Teams simply won’t be confident in him after his poor performance and maturity issues.

Haskins may get another chance eventually, but it’s unclear where or when that may be. These are just some possible places that he could land.
