The Washington Football Team needs a new quarterback of the future with Dwayne Haskins gone.

Just as quickly as the Dwayne Haskins era began, it ended. If you blinked, you might’ve missed it. If you didn’t, what you witnessed as your eyes strained was nothing short of a massive disappointment.

After being the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Haskins didn’t even make it two years with the team before being released. His release came in part due to poor play, but it was his off-the-field antics coupled with that play that no longer made him a fit for this locker room.

With Haskins gone, Washington now has a bigger need at the quarterback position than before. Even if you didn’t believe that Haskins would pan out, he undeniably had some upside. Now, the team’s quarterback room is filled with two veterans, 36-year-old Alex Smith and journeyman Taylor Heinicke, and two younger players, solid-backup and potential low-end start Kyle Allen and raw project Steven Montez.

Is that enough to get by at the quarterback position? Maybe for a year. But even if the team is relying on Allen re-signing and progressing or Smith staying healthy, they need some sort of longer-term upside at the QB spot if they want to truly open this team’s Super Bowl window.

Luckily for Washington, there is no shortage of options for them at the quarterback position this offseason. They have a good chunk of cap space, so they can pursue some free-agent options, some via trade, and several early-round prospects that they could target in the 2021 NFL Draft.
