Dwayne Haskins was released on Monday by the Washington Football Team.

The release of Dwayne Haskins signifies the Washington Football Team has a definitive answer with Haskins. Heading into year one of the Ron Rivera era, one of his biggest goals was to find out if Dwayne Haskins was a franchise quarterback.

With his release, it shows that he is not a franchise quarterback, at least not in the nation’s capital.

Monday ends a two-year-long turbulent relationship between the Washington Football Team and Dwayne Haskins. According to Dianna Russini of ESPN, Haskins was not someone a member of the coaching staff wanted to draft, but ownership forced their hand.

From day one, Haskins was never really wanted by any of the football people in the building. But when ownership wants him to succeed, the coaching staff is forced to try.

Haskins got chance after chance. Two separate coaching staffs could not make it work and it became so clear that he wasn’t the right fit for this franchise that Rivera cut him.

This shows a significant warning of what happens when owners try to become general managers. It typically does not end well.

Almost every scout and member of the Jay Gruden coaching staff was not in support of drafting Haskins with their first-round pick. But the owner disagreed and forced his hand. Luckily, they were able to trade up to take Montez Sweat at 26 to not completely blow the first round in 2019.

As the Washington Football Team enters another offseason in search of a top quarterback, it is a lesson every member of the organization should remember. When drafting a quarterback everyone, especially the football people, has to be on board with the selection.

The quarterback position is the most important position in football and one of the most important positions in all of sports. Without one, your collective potential as a team is capped. That is why the next quarterback needs to have the complete and full support of every member of the organization. That was something Haskins never received.

No, he didn’t do himself favors with both his performance on and off the field, but the lack of outward support certainly did not help. The release of Haskins signifies he was not a Rivera guy. It means the new regime for the Washington Football Team will now be in search of the next quarterback to lead this franchise.

Take the Haskins experiment as a lesson. When a significant amount of the football staff is not on board, steer clear. The quarterback position is too valuable to take chances on marketable players. Whoever the next “franchise quarterback” for the Washington Football Team ends up being, everyone has to be on board.

To be clear, these remarks should be taken with no ill-will towards Haskins. If I am being completely transparent with how I see it, he went to an organization that set him up for failure. An organization where only the owner believes in you is a recipe for disaster with a young quarterback, especially one needing to mature.
