Washington Football Team: Dwayne Haskins expected to start vs. Panthers
Dwayne Haskins is set to start again for the Washington Football Team.
The Washington Football Team has a chance to clinch the NFC East today, but before they can unlock that potential scenario, they will have to win against the Carolina Panthers. They will have to do that without their starting quarterback.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Washington Football Team is planning on starting backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins against the Panthers. Alex Smith, recovering from a calf injury, just isn’t quite ready to play.
Smith’s injury is in the same leg in which he suffered the nearly career-ending (and life-ending) break back in 2018. So, it’s no surprise to see the team approach his potential return with extreme caution. They don’t want to put him in a scenario where he can make the injury worse, so sitting him is the right move.

Now, Dwayne Haskins is going to have to step up in a key matchup for Washington. He has had a tumultuous week off the field, attending a party with strippers maskless and losing his captaincy, and being fined $40K, as a result, but now, he will have a chance for redemption.
If Haskins can lead Washington to a victory and play well in this contest, he will reward Ron Rivera‘s decision not to suspend him for this game. Had Smith been healthy, Haskins may not have been available, but Rivera didn’t want to punish the team for Haskins’ mistake and start Taylor Heinicke in place of him. So, that’s why Haskins is set to start today.
This is a big chance for Haskins to prove that he can win important games at the NFL level and play well. However, if he falls flat on his face, he’ll only pour fuel on the fire of fans calling for him to leave Washington in the wake of his actions. And heck, a win may not help him to turn down the heat from that crowd either.
We’ll soon see what Haskins can do and if he can lead Washington to the playoffs. Kickoff today is at 4:05 p.m. ET.
