Washington Football Team releases Dontrelle Inman to activate Antonio Gandy-Golden
The Washington Football Team has released Dontrelle Inman.
Ahead of their Week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Football Team made a somewhat unexpected roster decision.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is releasing veteran wide receiver Dontrelle Inman from the 53-man roster. The move will make room for Antonio Gandy-Golden on the roster, so this could end up being a sensible move. Still, Inman’s release is coming at a surprising time.
With Terry McLaurin dealing with an ankle injury, there was an expectation that Inman would have a chance to see the field for Washington against Carolina in Week 16. Instead, Washington opted to part with Inman and will roll with a pretty young receiving corps, including Cam Sims, Isaiah Wright, Robert Foster, Steven Sims, and Gandy-Golden.
This could pan out, as Cam Sims has flashed at times while Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round rookie, could end up replacing Inman as a big-bodied, outside receiving threat. AGG has been dealing with a hamstring injury, but he has a sky-high ceiling. Perhaps the extra time off the field allowed him a chance to learn the playbook better and he is now ready to make an impact in the receiving game.
Dontrelle Inman‘s release will only hurt Washington slightly from a depth and experience standpoint. He hadn’t been particularly productive when on the field. On the year, he had just 18 catches for 163 yards and two TDs. Since Week 7, he had played just 41 offensive snaps for the team and after missing a block on a trick play on fourth-and-one against the Steelers in Week 13, he was effectively benched by the team.
It will be interesting to see if Inman lands anywhere after his release. There are a few playoff teams that could use receiver depth, namely the New Orleans Saints, so perhaps he could latch on with one of those teams. Or perhaps NFL teams will look at his production on the year and deem him over the hill and not worth a roster spot.
Either way, parting with Inman seems like a fine move for Washington. The timing was a bit odd given McLaurin’s doubtful status, but because of the youth they have at WR, the team has enough upside. And as they build, they probably want as many young players as they can carry at the position. The 31-year-old Inman simply didn’t fit what this team needed, or wanted, at receiver anymore.
