The Washington Football Team can deliver the best Christmas gift of 2020: A division title.

As Week 16 kicks off on Christmas Day, the Washington Football Team is in a place that few fans, coaches, players, and pundits thought they would be in 2020. They are positioned to win the NFC East.

Yes, if all goes well for the Washington Football Team, they can officially clinch the division. They’ll need help to do it, but if they can beat the Carolina Panthers and improve to 7-8 and see the New York Giants lose to the Baltimore Ravens and fall to 5-10, Washington would be the new NFC East champions.

Getting those results won’t necessarily be easy. We don’t know what Washington’s QB room is going to look like on Sunday, and the Panthers boast a tough offense. And while the Giants are expected to lose to the Ravens, they stunned the Seahawks in a similar spot just a couple of weeks ago.

Nonetheless, the fact that Washington can win the division at this point is a sign of huge growth. At one point, this team was 2-7 and appeared to be on a crash course with a top-five pick. Now, they are positioned to potentially win the division in Ron Rivera’s first season.

As much as fans were focused on getting a potential franchise quarterback atop the draft just a couple of months ago, they are now clamoring for the team to reach the postseason. The defense has looked great and while nobody will mistake them for Super Bowl contenders, getting this relatively young defense playoff experience would go a long way toward helping them develop.

And no matter what, reaching the playoffs would be a huge positive for Rivera and his staff, who have done a great job of performing a massive culture overhaul in less than a year on the job.

On Christmas weekend, Washington can earn their seventh win of the season. With it could come their first playoff berth since 2015, Jay Gruden’s second season at the helm. There is no better Christmas gift for Washington football fans than reaching the playoffs, so hopefully, this team can deliver a strong performance and earn a once-unthinkable honor during what has been a crazy 2020 season.
