1. A franchise quarterback

This one is obvious. It is very likely the Washington Football Team does not have its franchise quarterback on the roster right now. The Dwayne Haskins era seems all but over with his latest off the field gaffe. Alex Smith is an awe-inspiring story, but at this stage in his career, he is not the type of quarterback that can lead you to the Super Bowl.

Kyle Allen is well-respected by the coaching staff and given his young age, he could still grow into a quality starting quarterback. It is not worth betting on, however.

As you can see priority No. 1 for the Washington Football Team should be to find their franchise quarterback. In today’s NFL, it is very hard to truly be a contender without the guy at quarterback. The elite quarterback can mask many problems (just look at the Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson), whereas non-elite quarterbacks can expose those problems.

The Washington Football Team cannot do what the Chicago Bears did, by letting an elite defense go to waste by waiting around for Mitchell Trubisky to develop.

What are the Washington Football Team’s options to find the franchise quarterback? Luckily for them, there will be plenty of options for them to consider.

Dak Prescott could become a free agent. Washington shouldn’t think twice about paying Prescott the money he wants if he becomes available. Other interesting options in free agency could include Jameis Winston, Cam Newton, or Jacoby Brissett.

In the draft the Washington Football Team could try and trade up for a Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, or Trey Lance after Trevor Lawrence is taken No. 1 overall (which will almost certainly happen). Or they could sit at their pick and take a chance on a Kyle Trask or Mac Jones. Or they could wait until Day 2 of the draft and select Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, who has a lot of physical talent but needs some refining with his mechanics.

There could even be quarterbacks available for trade. Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions may want to part ways as the Lions begin yet another rebuild. Carson Wentz, Jimmy Garoppolo, or Matt Ryan could also be available via trade.

Whatever avenue the Washington Football Team wants to take, there will be options. One thing is for sure: They have to get it right this time. It will be essential to maximizing their chances of becoming contenders. If not, purgatory may be inevitable.
