Shaun Dion Hamilton will be heading to IR for the Washington Football Team.

The Washington Football Team added another linebacker to their roster on Monday when they signed Mychal Kendricks from the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. At the time, it was unclear what the corresponding roster move was, but Washington clarified it later in the day.

According to the team’s official website, linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton has been placed on IR. Hamilton started and played a season-high 24 snaps against the Seahawks last week before suffering the elbow injury. Now, he’ll be out for the rest of the regular season and the first game of the playoffs — should Washington make it that far.

Hamilton’s presence was important for Washington as Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle) and Cole Holcomb (concussion protocol) were both out for the team last week. With Hamilton now joining them, the team will be very thin at the linebacker spot if either Pierre-Louis or Holcomb can’t return.

Beyond those three linebackers, Washington will be relying more heavily on Jon Bostic, who has flashed at times as a starter but isn’t great in coverage; Khaleke Hudson, a rookie fifth-round pick who showed well in his first extensive defensive action against the Seahawks; and triage of depth players: Thomas Davis, Jared Norris, and Jordan Kunaszyk.

Of course, Kendricks will play a role in the linebacker corps as well, so it makes sense that the team moved so quickly to sign him. The long-time NFL player was a solid starter as recently as last year, but he is coming off a torn ACL, so it may take him some time to work his way back into game shape.

Still, even if Kendricks can just be a rotational depth player that can help out there, he projects to be a nice addition for Washington. And once the team is fully healthy, he could thrive in certain packages.

We’ll soon see what Washington does at linebacker, but hopefully, they get Holcomb and Pierre-Louis back to bolster the ranks. The position will continue to be the weakness of the defense, but they still should be able to cobble together a decent rotation to help the front seven. It’s a bit harder without Hamilton, but since the injury isn’t serious, it’s not a big one to worry about.
