The Washington Football Team signed LB Mychal Kendricks away from the Seahawks.

The Washington Football Team may have lost to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, but they got a small measure of revenge on Monday. And in the process, they bolstered their linebacker corps as well.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Washington signed veteran linebacker Mychal Kendricks off the Seahawks practice squad. Kendricks has been in the NFL since 2012 and has made 103 career starts, so he will certainly add some experience to Washington’s linebacker room.

Kendricks was once a big-time foe of Washington as a member of the Eagles. His well-rounded skill set made him hard to beat as a true three-down linebacker. However, the end of his tenure with the team was dicey, as his playing time decreased while he battled with injuries and he requested a trade before being released.

From there, Kendricks signed with the Browns but was arrested for insider trading. The Browns promptly released him but later in the season, amid injuries to their linebacker corps, Seattle swooped in and added him. He played in four games in 2018 but by 2019, he was a full-time starter. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in the final game of the regular season and has spent the 2020 season recovering from it.

During that time, Kendricks was on the Seahawks practice squad. Now, he will join Washington in the hopes of earning a role in their linebacker room, as there wasn’t an opening in Seattle.

Kendricks played well in 2019 (72 tackles, three sacks) and can surely still play a role on a contending team… provided that his injured knee has healed up well. For Washington, taking a chance on him is a sensible move, as the team is without Cole Holcomb (concussion protocol) and Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle) and could use some extra depth.

If all goes well, Kendricks could end up being the top backup and spot starter for Washington. They’re risking very little to get him and considering that he’s only 30, he may still have a couple more good years left in the tank. At the very least, he’s an experienced, solid linebacker who can help mentor the younger players alongside Thomas Davis.

We’ll soon see if Kendricks can catch on in Washington but no matter how you look at it, this is an intriguing, high-upside move for Washington.
