Round 1

Patrick Surtain, Cornerback, Alabama (6-1, 205)

Drafting a very talented cornerback (arguably the best in this draft) may take some fans and analysts by surprise, but selecting one here could solidify the unit for years to come.  Imagine a cornerback corps of Patrick Surtain, Ronald Darby (assuming he re-signs), Kendall Fuller, Jimmy Moreland, and Danny Johnson.  That is a very solid group.

Surtain is a crafty and very intelligent corner who is very deliberate in his approach to guarding wide receivers.  He will typically let the receiver make the initial route known and then utilize his incredible burst and superb maneuverability to allow the Crimson Tide standout to shut down the play.

Surtain has excellent closing speed. He quickly tracks down running backs and is able to force fumbles consistently.  He has solid speed overall,  good jumping ability,  is very versatile, and typically does well against taller and bigger receivers.

Other Possible First Round Targets:

  • Micah Parsons, Linebacker, Penn State
  • Ja’Marr Chase, Wide Receiver, LSU
  • Zach Wilson, Quarterback, BYU
  • Penei Sewell, Offensive Tackle, Oregon
  • Caleb Farley, Cornerback, Virginia Tech
