Washington Football Team should pursue safety Tedric Thompson.

The Washington Football Team is dealing with some issues at the safety position. Kam Curl has done a great job of replacing Landon Collins after his season-ending Achilles injury but next to him, the team hasn’t had an answer.

Deshazor Everett has been solid when starting, but he is dealing with injury issues that have kept him out the last two weeks. Troy Apke, the starter at the beginning of the season, was benched in favor of Everett but has started in place of him recently. He has continued to make occasional solid plays, but more often than not, he has struggled.

Jeremy Reaves may get a chance to start if Everett can’t play in Week 13. He has looked good in limited action the last three years, but even if he pans out, Washington could stand to add some depth at the safety position. That’s why there was some chatter about Eric Reid joining the team a few weeks back, but nothing ever came from that.

Now, Washington may have a chance to add a different safety to their roster. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Tedric Thompson is now available after the Kansas City Chiefs released him in a “surprise” move.

Thompson, a fourth-year player, would be an ideal target for Washington. He’s only 25 years old, but he has already played in 37 games during his NFL career and has made 16 starts in his career. When he was with the Seahawks, he proved to be a solid starter and logged 76 tackles, three interceptions, and a forced fumble over a two-year span (20 games, 16 starts).

Beyond his experience, Thompson has a solid, 6-foot, 204-pound frame and very good athletic ability. He would provide nice depth as a potential top backup and he could re-emerge as a starter if all goes well. Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio could work with him to hone his skills and even if he doesn’t pan out as a top-three option at safety, he’d be a good special teams option.

Washington should consider adding Thompson to the fold if they can. He belongs on an NFL roster and the only reason the Chiefs cut him was that they have a lot of depth at safety and were facing a roster crunch.

Thompson’s upside is worth gambling on. If he pans out, Washington could have a solid starter at one of the safety spots or at the very least, a great top backup at one of their thinnest position.
