Washington Football Team gratitudes for Thanksgiving 2020
Terry McLaurin is a superstar
It feels like it’s been ages since Washington has had a legit WR1, but Scary Terry has been fitting the bill and then some. The last time this team had somewhat close to a WR1 was with Pierre Garcon, or to go even further back, Santana Moss.
But who can remember the last receiver Washington drafted that actually served as a WR1 at least for one season? Yes, Jamison Crowder was a steal and shined in his time with the team, but he was never a WR1.
There were many players who were hoped to be the next great WR1 for the team but it was miss after miss for the team. It felt like watching Shaq at the free-throw line.
Washington drafted Taylor Jacobs, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Leonard Hankerson, and Josh Doctson. Wow, that’s one sad list. You have to go all the way back to 2001 to find a potential WR1 in Rod Gardner, and he only starred for a very limited time.
That is one of the reasons Washington should be grateful for McLaurin. It’s been a long time coming for the franchise to hit on a WR. Even if Dwayne Haskins never plays another down for Washington, we can all be thankful that the team was able to scout McLaurin while they were doing their research on Haskins.
McLaurin has 62 receptions for 871 yards, already surpassing his reception total for last season, and he’s less than 50 yards shy of passing his receiving yardage total for last season. In only his second season, he is already one of the elite receivers in the league. Currently, McLaurin has the fourth-most receiving yards in the NFL, and has the most YAC for any receiver in the league.
In addition to his play on the field, McLaurin’s leadership has been a major asset for Washington. Earlier this season, he was unanimously named a team captain by the players. Coach Rivera spoke highly of McLaurin’s maturity and how the receiver lets his play do the talking:
"What’s been impressive is for such a young player, such a young man, to be as mature as he is first and foremost and be the right kind of person you want to be one of your leaders. A very quiet leader who just goes out and does his job."
