There’s a new captain in the Washington Football Team’s locker room.

The Washington Football Team voted in five team captains before the start of the 2020 regular season: Two on the offensive side of the ball and three on the defensive side of the ball. Dwayne Haskins and Brandon Scherff constituted the offensive team captains, while Jonathan Allen and  Landon Collins were named the defensive team captains. Deshazor Everett, now the starting free safety, was additionally named as the special teams captain.

At the start of the season, the initial captain group was met with optimism. Particularly in Haskins’ case, it was a sign that he’d risen to Ron Rivera’s challenge in the offseason and grown as a leader for the Washington Football Team. But as the year has gone on, Washington’s captainship has taken a bit of a hit.

Since the initial captains were named, Haskins has been benched, and part of his benching was rumored to be based on his mentality. Additionally, Landon Collins was lost for the season with a torn Achilles suffered against the Dallas Cowboys.

Between Haskins’ benching and Collins’ injury, the Washington Football Team found itself running short in terms of on-field captain influence. The team remedied that issue today at practice. Per reports legitimized by the team’s official Twitter account, second-year wide receiver Terry McLaurin was unanimously voted a team captain by his peers.

Ever since he walked through the doors at Ashburn for the first time, McLaurin has most certainly lead by example. He drew early praise from Jay Gruden’s regime in 2019, and quickly rose beyond his roots as a special teamer, to become not just the team’s best wide receiver, but also one of the best wide receivers in the division.

Thus far in 2020, McLaurin has expanded on his rookie-year success. Through seven games, he has 43 receptions for 577 yards and two touchdowns, and he’s now widely regarded as one of the best receivers in the entire league.

Performance-wise, the 25-year old McLaurin is comfortably beyond the captain threshold, and his impact as a locker room leader has also been noticeable. He received widespread acclaim for his postgame speech after Washington’s dominant win against the Cowboys, and by now, it’s a unanimous opinion that this captain’s patch is well deserved.
