Washington Football Team routs Cowboys 41-16, takes NFC East lead
By Ian Cummings
In what might be the most chaotic timeline, the Washington Football Team has bested the Dallas Cowboys, and now has the division lead at 4-7.
What’s different about the Washington Football Team in Week 1 and the Washington Football Team in Week 12? In Week 1, the team was 1-0, and in Week 12, the team is 4-7.
What’s the same? Both of those teams are in first place in the NFC East.
The Washington Football Team has gone 3-7 since starting off its season with a victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it’s been anywhere from first place to last place through the first twelve games.
But things have come full circle for Ron Rivera’s squad, and pending Sunday’s results, Washington is once again sitting atop the NFC East, and again coming off their best game of the season.
Washington again started slow, failing to garner a first down on their first offensive drive, and early on, the Cowboys stuck right with the Washington Football Team, trailing them 13-17 at the half. In the second half, gridlock carried over, and turnovers contributed to three points apiece for the two NFC East contenders.
The Washington Football Team put up a valiant effort through all four quarters, but it wasn’t until the final stanza that Washington truly pulled away and asserted its dominance on the team from Dallas. Washington scored 21 unanswered in the final quarter; two touchdowns came from Antonio Gibson on his monster day, and a third amounted from a pick-six by edge rusher Montez Sweat.
Washington dominated its last game against Dallas as well, but this game is easily more impressive. Dallas came into this game with more of a rhythm on both offense and defense. They took the Steelers to the final minute two weeks ago, and beat the Vikings in Week 11. Dallas was not the shell that they were in Week 7, and Washington still routed them.
You can’t ask for much more from Thanksgiving; the Washington Football Team has officially swept the Dallas Cowboys and outscored them 66-19 in 2020. But this game takes on added significance with its implications. Washington was a tepid playoff contender before, but now, the team is officially back in the playoff race, and they can control their destiny if they can assert control over the NFC East from this point forward.
