There could be some hidden gems on the Washington Football Team roster.

Does the Washington Football Team have a Timmy Smith on its 2020 roster?

You all remember Smith, right? The fifth-round draft pick in 1987, who made his first NFL start in the 1988 Super Bowl. He established the league-record for rushing yards in a Super Bowl, gashing the Denver Broncos for 204. Timmy Smith, who ran for well over 300 yards in the 1987-88 playoffs, but would manage just 600 for his entire career.

During the regular season, Smith was the fifth-leading rusher on his own team. He trailed presumptive starter George Rogers. He trailed the pass-catching back Kelvin Bryant. He trailed the change-of-pace guy Keith Griffin. And he trailed – by a wide margin – replacement-player phenom Lionel Vital.

But when the Super Bowl rolled around, it was unheralded Timmy Smith slicing and dicing the Denver defense.

Washington is not going to the Super Bowl in 2020. (Probably should have said SPOILER ALERT there – sorry.) But at the midpoint, coming off an ugly loss to the New York Giants, the season remains wide open.

So the question is – are there any gems hidden on the roster who could step up in time to give the team a Timmy Smith-like shot in the arm?

Maybe. Just maybe.
