Win the special teams battle

An underrated storyline of the previous New York-Washington game was the impact of the special teams. A New York Giants running into the kicker penalty on a Tress Way punt set up a fourth-and-five that Washington then went for it and converted. Washington ended up going down and scoring on a Logan Thomas touchdown, to cut the deficit to 13-10 just before halftime.

The Washington Football Team also had its special teams gaffe. Dustin Hopkins pushed a 47-yard field goal wide right. That’s a kick that is supposed to be an almost automatic kick for NFL kickers.

What was the final score again? 20-19 Giants. If Dustin Hopkins converts on that kick, the game would have been very different.

The Washington Football Team needs to win the special teams battle. Way needs to be his usual spectacular self. Hopkins has to make his kicks. They need to limit penalties and maybe even have a nice return on punts and kicks here and there.

In a game that has two very similar teams, winning on special teams will be key.

If the Washington Football Team establishes the run, forces and capitalizes on Daniel Jones’ turnovers and wins on special teams they put themselves in good position for a win over the division rival New York Giants.
