Washington Football Team: Three last minute 2020 trade scenarios

The trade deadline is almost here; here are three last minute trade scenarios for the Washington Football Team.

“I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn’t have to give up that much.”

So said would-be general manager George Costanza to Yankees boss George Steinbrenner in the classic Seinfeld episode “The Caddy.” George was merely doing what we all like to do, especially as the trade deadline approaches. He was devising fabulously unrealistic deals that only work in a universe populated one brilliant visionary (you) and a bunch of complete morons (everybody else).

I have seen many such scenarios spelled out this year. And full disclosure, I have been guilty of spelling out some of the most ludicrous ones myself. So with the deadline mere hours away, I am repenting by offering up three actually plausible scenarios for the Washington Football Team.

Each is predicated upon the odd position in which the Washington Football Team finds itself. It is the same for all four NFC East teams. In a normal year, you have buyers and sellers. But in the historically pitiful NFC East this year, every team is both a buyer and a seller. Buyers – because every team has a decent chance of winning the division with some very modest upgrades. Sellers – because every team has a multitude of roster holes, badly in need of more draft picks to help plug.

But Washington is nicely situated because they have three players who are no longer playing significant roles for the Washington Football Team – but could also offer some value to a contending team. So it may be possible to acquire some help this year without sacrificing draft capital in the years to come.

There is no scenario in which one of these players – Ryan Anderson, Dwayne Haskins, or Ryan Kerrigan – can be dealt directly for a player who could help out this year. So Washington would have to work a double trade. A player for a pick, and then a pick for a player. Under no circumstances (Okay, maybe under some highly unlikely circumstances) would I give up a draft pick this year. The only way you trade a pick is if you are replacing it in a separate deal.

So here are three possibilities.
