It seems so long ago, doesn’t it? “Uptown Funk” was everywhere. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Holton-Arms, ’78) won her 4th straight Emmy for Veep. And Jay Gruden’s Washington Football Team also won four straight at the end of the season, including two straight on the road in Philly and Dallas.
With that run, they finished 9-7 and won the NFC East. Yes – you read that right. Jay Gruden coached the team to the NCF East crown.
That sure didn’t seem possible after an ugly loss to eventual Conference champs Carolina just before Thanksgiving. That 44-16 blow-out left Washington at 4-6.
But the turning point had already come three games before. That’s when Washington was sitting at 2-4 and trailing Tampa Bay 24-0. Things looked dark. As dark as dark can be. Then Kirk Cousins brought them back. The “You like that” game.
When Chris Baker sealed the game with a fumble recovery late in the 4th quarter, it did seem like miracles were possible.
