On the other hand, Geron Christian Sr. may not be a great left tackle, but he is playing at a higher level than I ever thought possible.
Speaking of possible, it is possible that Ron Rivera, Jack Del Rio, and Chris Harris were the only three people who thought Troy Apke could become a quality free safety. You, me, and your grandmother all doubted it.
On the other hand, I actually thought Wes Martin was the second-best guard Washington had. If we go out and sign former Slippery Rock star Wes Hills, Martin won’t even be the second-best “Wes” on the team.
Admit it – a lot of you thought Morgan Moses was done. He wasn’t. I hoped that last year’s crater was the result of injury and disquiet over what was going on with his friend Trent Williams. I suspect that was the case. He has bounced back nicely.
On the other hand, I never thought Alex Smith would play football again. Then again, who really did?
I’ve been saying it for the past year. Jon Bostic is not a great player. But, ugly hit on Andy Dalton notwithstanding, he is the steadiest thing we’ve got in the middle of the linebacking corps. I’m still saying it.
On the other hand, I thought Jordan Brailford was due for a breakout year as a situational pass rusher. If he is, he’ll be doing it for the Minnesota Vikings.
I’ve also been saying that Ryan Anderson is a second-round bust. He doesn’t really have a position. There was a chance for him to step up when a couple of defensive linemen went down early on. He didn’t.
On the other hand, I really thought Dwayne Haskins would get a good long look this year. I didn’t know if he was the answer or not, but I felt pretty confident that barring injury, he’d be under center for the entire year.
I did know that Reuben Foster was not going to play for this team – or probably any other. Great talent. Cannot stay healthy.
On the other hand, I was hoping against hope that Bryce Love would not only play, but flourish.
A dozen good calls, and a dozen bad calls. Back when I was a kid, that would get me a C, which is average. But we live in an era of grade inflation and participation trophies. I’ll take a B.
