The Washington Football Team has placed both Saahdiq Charles and Antonio Gandy-Golden on IR.

The Washington Football Team hasn’t had much luck with fourth-round picks during the past few years. The likes of Samaje Perine, Troy Apke, and Bryce Love had little to no production during their rookie campaigns, but there was some hope that Saahdiq Charles and Antonio Gandy-Golden would be different.

Unfortunately, both Charles and Gandy-Golden have struggled with injury woes amid a shortened offseason that has stunted their growth. And now, they will be out for at least the next month with injuries.

According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, Washington officially placed Charles and Gandy-Golden on IR Saturday. Charles is dealing with a dislocated kneecap while Gandy-Golden has a hamstring strain.

With two open roster spots, Washington officially signed Robert Foster to the active roster as had been reported earlier in the week. He won’t pass through COVID protocols before Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, but beyond that, he will be a player to watch.

Another receiver, Tony Brown, was signed off Washington’s practice squad to the 53-man roster. His spot on the practice squad was taken by the recently-released Marcus Baugh, who will provide Washington with organizational depth at the tight end spot.

Meanwhile, Jeff Badet was elevated to the 53-man roster to serve as a top backup at receiver against the Cowboys. Devaroe Lawrence was elevated as well, but he and Badet will return to the practice squad following Sunday’s game.

All of these roster moves make sense, but it’s certainly disappointing that the team will have to operate without their fourth-round picks from 2020. Charles could’ve found a role on the offensive line, and the left guard spot was a particularly shaky spot that he could’ve filled in.

As for Gandy-Golden, many were hoping that he would emerge as a potential red-zone weapon during the latter half of his first season. Perhaps some time on the sidelines will allow him to rehab and learn the playbook more, but it would’ve been nice to get him more reps to see if he could eventually be a starter.

Charles and Gandy-Golden will be eligible to return to Washington after three games on the sideline. Because of the Week 8 bye, that means the duo will be eligible to return ahead of Week 11. We’ll see if either are ready or if any of the replacements for the team can step up in the meantime while they’re unavailable.
