5. OT Cornelius Lucas

Since being signed during the 2020 offseason, Cornelius Lucas hasn’t played much for Washington. He has been serving as the team’s top swing tackle while Morgan Moses and Geron Christian have been manning the tackle spots.

However, it seems possible that Lucas may play in Week 7. According to multiple reports, Christian was dealing with some sort of injury and was limping around the field during Thursday’s walkthrough. As a result, Lucas was working at the team’s top left tackle and that could be a spot that he occupies on Sunday afternoon.

Much will depend on the Friday injury report. If Christian returns to practice and looks good, Lucas won’t need to be watched, as he won’t play much unless one of the tackles gets banged up in-game.

If Christian doesn’t play though, Washington fans will get their first real look at Lucas. It was expected that he would challenge for the starting left tackle job this offseason and perhaps even be the stopgap option there for the squad. Instead, he was beaten by the younger Christian after he had a subpar camp.

Perhaps Lucas can make an impact if he is on the field. He played well for the Chicago Bears last season as their starting right tackle for half of the season, so it’s possible that he’s just a better game-day player than a practice player. If he is on the field, he will pique the interest of fans watching as the team continues to assess the depth they have on a weak offensive line unit.

Against the Cowboys, Lucas will be tested by Demarcus Lawrence and Aldon Smith. That’s only if he does start, but if he sees action and looks good, the team can be at least a little bit confident that they’ll have good tackle depth even if they need a longer-term starter on either side of the line moving forward.
