Washington Football Team releases TE Marcus Baugh among roster moves
The Washington Football Team has released tight end Marcus Baugh.
One of the biggest surprises of the offseason for the Washington Football Team was the group they brought in at the tight end position. Keeping Logan Thomas and Jeremy Sprinkle was expected, but the unheralded Marcus Baugh ended up making the team as well.
Baugh had been a little-known free-agent signee by Washington during the offseason. He had come into the league as an undrafted free agent and previously played for the Raiders and for Ron Rivera‘s Carolina Panthers. Baugh was brought in as depth and competition but few expected him to make the team.
While Baugh did make the 53-man roster, his tenure there didn’t last long. Just six games into the season, Washington has released Baugh, according to the team’s official website. In a corresponding roster move, they added Temarrick Hemingway, another former Carolina tight end, to the active roster from the practice squad and signed receiver Robert Foster to a deal.

The move is a sensible one. While Baugh did enough during the offseason to evidently warrant a chance, he hadn’t made much of an impact in his limited time with the team. Between dealing with a toe injury and catching just a single two-yard pass during his time with the team, he just didn’t look like anything more than roster fodder. In a normal tight end group, he almost certainly wouldn’t have made the team.
Meanwhile, Hemingway, 27, was a former sixth-round pick by the Rams in the 2016 NFL Draft. He hasn’t panned out with the Rams or the Broncos yet, but he did catch a 10-yard pass in his first game with Washington and has a solid 6-foot-5, 245-pound frame. He may not turn into anything, but giving him some run and a chance to prove himself makes sense.

All told, Washington has a problem at the TE position, and it’s one that probably won’t be fixed until the 2021 offseason at the earliest. That said, cycling through a few options this year to see if any can be future role players is a good strategy, so even if these guys don’t pan out, giving Hemingway a chance is a sensible move.
