Positive 5

The return of Cole Holcomb on Sunday was a big positive for Washington.  He was making plays all over the field and was able to produce six tackles against the Giants.

It’s obvious that the team missed him during his recent injury, but Holcomb seemed like he was more than excited to be back on the field.  Holcomb’s tenacious motor and unrelenting pursuit of excellence seems to be on display whenever he is in the lineup.

Holcomb was an obvious fifth-round steal in the 2019 NFL draft after a promising rookie campaign.  He still has some learning ahead, but this North Carolina Tar Heel is proving that he belongs and could be an important part of this defense for many years.  Welcome back, Cole Holcomb!  We missed you!

Negative 5

The pass rush on Sunday was virtually non-existent.  The first game was superb for the defensive line, but the production has been dropping ever since.  The defensive front should’ve shined on Sunday, but they made a 0-5 quarterback – who was having a horrible season – look like a decent prospect.  The defensive line is a solid unit and they have done a fine job this season, but the sacks and quarterback pressures have been lacking lately.

Ryan Kerrigan had one sack on Sunday and that was the team total as well.  Tim Settle, Daron Payne, and Jon Allen need to find a way to make life uncomfortable for the opposing quarterback.  These are good players, but each one needs to bring the pressure on Sundays and add a few sacks to the statistics sheet.
