Washington Football Team Dud: The Washington pass rush

Daniel Jones is at his worst under pressure. He has played scared numerous times this year because of pressure that has forced him into sacks, turnovers, and other mistakes throughout the season.

Coming into the game, it was expected that Washington’s pass rush would be able to take advantage of the Giants’ weak offensive line and get after Jones. That never quite materialized.

The defensive line wasn’t bad during the game, per say. They did get one sack of Jones and helped to slow down Devonta Freeman and the run game throughout the contest. They also chased No. 4 overall pick Andrew Thomas from the game, as the left tackle was benched after some early struggles.

However, despite these positives, getting just one sack stands out as a major negative. Jones had been sacked at least twice in every game so far this season. Washington was supposed to have a big advantage up front and be able to force Jones into mistakes and make him uncomfortable. They couldn’t do that consistently enough to make a difference.

Washington’s defensive line is supposed to be the best part of their defense. The team needed them to take advantage of the Giants’ weakness and get more pressure on Jones to put the offense in advantageous situations. They couldn’t quite do that. They helped limit the Giants offense to 13 points, so that’s a solid, but the lack of pressure and Jones 74 rushing yards certainly qualify as a disappointment.

Maybe their pressure was lacking a bit because the Giants only threw 19 passes during the game. But still, the unit needed to be more aggressive in this game to make a difference. If they were, perhaps the outcome of this game would’ve been different.
