Washington Football Team Dud: OL Saahdiq Charles

Charles landing on the dud list is through no fault of his own, but so much was made of the fourth-round pick’s potential debut in the starting lineup on Sunday. There was a lot of hype for the LSU lineman and there was some hope that he might be a big-time upgrade over Wes Martin.

However, Charles was on the field for just a few plays before he left the field with a knee injury. He would leave the game and didn’t return after being declared out with a knee injury.

Charles was replaced by Wes Schweitzer in the game and Schweitzer did fine, just as he did in relief of Brandon Scherff. But the reason that Charles is a dud is less about the performance at the position and more about an issue with Charles.

So far this season, Charles just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He dealt with a long-lasting calf injury during training camp that sidelined him until a few games into the season. He was finally active and healthy and ready to start, and he suffered another injury. That’s certainly unfortunate, but it’s also extremely frustrating.

We’ll see how long Charles is out this time around, but this was supposed to be a year to evaluate him and see if he’s a tackle or guard long-term for the team and if he’s a starter or a backup. Because he can’t get on the field, it’s hard to evaluate what he is and he’s missing out on valuable reps.

Charles could certainly pan out and hopefully, he’ll land on the studs list here at some point in the year. His starting debut was just a dud because of his injury.
