4. Saahdiq Charles, Brandon Scherff help Antonio Gibson set career-high in rushing yards

The Washington Football Team’s offensive line will be getting a potential facelift at the guard spots this week. We already know that Brandon Scherff will be returning to the lineup at the right guard spot, but his return could create a ripple effect at left guard.

It would seem that Wes Martin’s starting job is in jeopardy at the very least. With Scherff back, Wes Schweitzer is available to start at left guard should the team want to do that. However, Saahdiq Charles, who is finally healthy after a long battle with a calf injury, has also been working with the first team at times this week. He could be in-line for a starting job if Washington is willing to trust him.

All told, I think that Charles will get a crack at replacing Martin, just so the coaching staff can see what they have in him. If he struggles, they’ll have Schweitzer in reserve to replace him, but Charles’ tape at LSU was good, so he should find success on the interior line.

With Scherff and Charles in the fold and available, Washington’s blocking should be much better than it was before. As a result, they will have a chance to block better and in particular, they should find success in the run game.

The Giants’ run defense is solid, as their front line of Dalvin Tomlinson, Leonard Williams, and Dexter Lawrence is big, strong, and hard to move. Nonetheless, a full-strength Washington O-Line should have a chance to generate some push against them and that will help Antonio Gibson.

Gibson will have a chance to set a new career-high in rushing yards. That may not seem all that bold sing his previous high was only 55, but doing so in this type of matchup would be a big win for the young back who had never been a primary running back until this season.
