The Washington Football Team claimed defensive end Casey Toohill off waivers from the Eagles on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the Washington Football Team lost Jordan Brailford to the Minnesota Vikings. Brailford elected to sign with the Vikings off Washington’s practice squad and Washington didn’t do anything to keep him around.

The loss of Brailford wasn’t a big deal; after all, the team has a lot of depth on the defensive line. Still, Washington needed some organizational depth at the position after Brailford’s departure given that Ryan Kerrigan and Ryan Anderson are set to be free agents next offseason.

Washington got that on Wednesday. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Washington claimed defensive lineman/edge rusher Casey Toohill off waivers from the Eagles.

This is certainly a move with upside. Toohill is a solid athlete and was productive during his college days at Stanford. The 6-foot-5, 264-pound edge player had 57 tackles and eight sacks during his final season with the Cardinal before being drafted in the seventh round by the Eagles. He made the 53-man roster and saw action in one game for the team in late September before being waived.

The Eagles were probably hoping that they could stash Toohill on the practice squad, so Washington swooping in to get him was smart. They’re stealing from a divisional rival and adding a young depth player with upside. They’ll be fine if Toohill doesn’t pan out, but they’re risking nothing to try him out. That’s certainly a smart move.

Toohill may not play much for Washington, but behind the scenes, maybe he can focus on adding a little weight to his frame to hold up against the run. Conversely, he could also try playing linebacker a bit given that he was considered a bit of a positional tweener coming into the league, but either way, Washington will be able to experiment with him.

dark. Next. WFT shouldn't target recently released Le'Veon Bell

Toohill is a solid addition at this point in the season. We’ll soon see if he amounts to anything, but taking a chance on the 2020 draft pick is a sensible move.
