On Sunday, the Washington Football Team had its worst game of the 2020 season. A game that was all too familiar.

The Washington Football Team came into Sunday’s game, with what was supposed to be a rejuvenated team. With a new quarterback running the show, that the coaches and players trusted, things have to get better right?

Wrong. The defense was putrid in the first half. Jared Goff, sliced up the secondary as the defensive line struggled to get any pressure. Once again, the linebackers showed their ineptitude in covering tight ends. Once again, the safeties looked lost, including Landon Collins and his big-money deal.

The offensive line was bullied all game long. The receivers struggled to separate and the running game was non-existent. Alex Smith was playing his first game in a little under two years. Asking him to overcome all those deficiencies is almost unfair.

The Alex Smith story is great. I am very happy for him. He should definitely win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award this year. Name the award after him for that matter.

However, the rust from not playing a game in nearly two years was apparent. Aaron Donald and the rest of the Rams defensive line constantly being in the Washington Football Team backfield did not help matters. It certainly wasn’t the perfect opponent or conditions for Smith to make his anticipated return.

The Washington Football Team was flat out embarrassed on Sunday against the Los Angelas Rams. When the offense seemed to have some life with Kyle Allen, the defense couldn’t get off the field. When the defense finally strung together some stops, the offense mailed in its worst half of football in recent memory.

They had a net of -6 yards gained offensively in the second half. No, that is not a typo.

This was a game that was all too familiar for Washington fans. They were outmatched. There was just not enough firepower for the Washington Football Team to keep up with the Rams and offensive savant Sean McVay.

The culture may be changing under Ron Rivera. Rivera is slowly building a more respectable franchise. However, he cannot fix a roster with massive holes at a lot of places overnight. Jordan Reid of the Draft Network said the Washington Football Team has a roster that is at least two years away. He is probably right, unfortunately.

Not only does Ron Rivera have a massive cultural overhaul to pull off, he also has a sizable roster overhaul on his hands. It is a new era in Washington. It is a new year. But, unfortunately, it still has the stench of the previous Washington Football Team regime. It is a similar roster that went 3-13 last year.

Sunday showed the rebuild of the Washington Football Team into a contender is going to take some time. Luckily for Washington, a putrid NFC East keeps them right in the hunt despite their poor start.

That’s something to be positive about, for now. The season is not totally lost yet for Washington, at least not yet.
