The “Better Than Expected” Award

G Wes Schweitzer

Wes Schweitzer has been the replacement for Brandon Scherff. The newly acquired guard from Atlanta has actually been solid. He has shown he is quality depth along the interior. The level of play has not dropped significantly since Scherff has been sidelined with an injury.

One of Schweitzer’s biggest strengths is his toughness and mean streak he possesses. What he lacks in physical talent, he makes up for in pure will. He has been solid at times in the run game and has not been a total liability in pass protection.

However, he does lack quick foot speed, which has been apparent in run blocking. He has been okay at times but he does not possess that elite ability to get to the second level on a consistent basis. He also can sometimes get blown up at the point of attack due to a poor base.

Schweitzer has played like a quality level backup guard. He has had his moments but he also has moments to remind you why he is not on the starting line. Schweitzer has filled in nicely for Brandon Scherff.
