The Washington Football Team’s pass rush will be short-staffed on Sunday against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

In Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, the Washington Football Team had a chunk taken out of its vaunted defensive line, as both Matt Ioannidis and Chase Young were taken off the field with injuries before the conclusion of the first half.

Earlier this week, confirmation was received that Ioannidis’ injury was season-ending; Ioannidis suffered a torn bicep, and his recovery may last into next year. The hope was that Young’s injury wasn’t as serious, and while it isn’t, he will still miss time.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Young’s MRI from Tuesday revealed that Young suffered a moderate groin strain in Washington’s Week 3 loss against the Browns. Rapoport went on to state that Young has already been ruled out for the upcoming Ravens game. But after that, his outlook is less clear.

Washington chose not to place Young on short-term injured reserve, which is ultimately a positive indication, as it shows that Young is not expected to be out for more than three weeks. Rapoport reiterated this notion, specifying that Young is viewed as week-to-week, and will likely be re-evaluated after the Ravens game.

The Washington Football Team can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that Young’s injury won’t sideline him long-term. Young was already blossoming into one of the better pass rushers in the NFL; through two games before Week 3, he had 2.5 total sacks, which was tied for the NFL lead at the time with Steelers standout T.J. Watt.

Young’s early dismissal from the Cleveland game sent him down the leaderboards a bit, but he’s still one of the highest-graded NFL rookies through three games, and his impact has been tangible both against the run and the pass. Young has lived up to his draft billing thus far, and while he won’t get a chance to keep the momentum going against Baltimore, he should be back soon after that.

In Young’s place, Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat should be the starters, both of whom have had standout games so far this season. Additionally, Nate Orchard was elevated from the practice squad, presumably to provide depth on the edge while Young is out.
