The Washington Football Team is going to be without Brandon Scherff for a few weeks, but the initial report about his injury is “positive.”

In the Washington Football Team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the team suffered a blow on the offensive side of the ball. Right guard Brandon Scherff went down with an apparent knee injury and had to be helped off the field. He didn’t return to action and it seemed possible that the injury could be a severe one.

However, Washington got some good news on Monday. According to reports, Scherff isn’t going to be out for the whole season.

As Ron Rivera said, per Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic, Scherff will only be out a few weeks, and the initial report about the injury is “positive”.

This is good news for Washington. Though Scherff didn’t play particularly well against the Cardinals on Sunday, he still is their best offensive lineman. Had he been out for the season, the team’s protection in front of Dwayne Haskins and the running game would’ve been much worse off. Now, there’s at least a chance that he can return and provide quality blocking at the right guard spot.

In Scherff’s absence, Wes Schweitzer seems most likely to start at the right guard spot. Schweitzer had been signed during the offseason to compete for the left guard job and provide veteran depth along the O-Line. He lost the job to Wes Martin and has only been a serviceable starter at best. So, his performance will need to be watched closely this week, as his blocking could have an impact on the game.

Still, it’s good news that Scherff will be able to return. His presence should help Haskins and it will also help the team evaluate whether or not they want to keep the free-agent-to-be. Had he been out for the year, the team wouldn’t have been able to evaluate his play if they considered bringing him back on a short-term deal. But now, they’ll likely have the second half of the season to see if Scherff can regain the form that made him a three-time Pro Bowler.
