Washington Football Team alone atop the NFC East after Week 1
The Washington Football Team is alone in first place in the NFC East after Week 1.
If you told a Washington Football Team that their squad would be alone in first place after Week 1 of the NFL season just a few days ago, they probably would’ve laughed at you. Maybe an optimistic one wouldn’t have, but the general consensus assumed that even if Washington won, the Dallas Cowboys may be atop the division with them. Or maybe the New York Giants if they could pull off an upset.
Instead, Washington was the only team to pull off an upset. The Cowboys were upset themselves and while the Giants played well and stayed competitive against the Steelers until an ill-timed pick by Daniel Jones, they ultimately lost.
That means that Washington is the only team in the division with a 1-0 record and by virtue of that, they are atop the NFC East.

Even this early in the season, this is a notable achievement for Washington. Few pundits gave Washington a chance to win against the Eagles. Even the fans that believed they could win weren’t convinced that they would. And when they went down 17-0, most assumed it would be more of the same for the squad.
But instead, they kept battling. Ron Rivera’s squad did everything they could to win that game and they are reaping the rewards. They are building the culture the right way and because of the other results across the NFC East, they find themselves a game up in the standings at this incredibly early junction of the season.
Now, this one-game lead over the other three teams in the division may not amount to much. But for Washington’s players, it’s still good to see their name atop the standing. It will help them buy into the culture, and Rivera can point to this as a good start but something to build on and a level of play to maintain.
We’ll soon see if Washington can stay near the top of the division. They’ll be playing against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 in what should be an interesting test. Even if they don’t win, they’ll still be guaranteed a share of first place in the division post-Week 2.
